AIAVT Merit Award – Lathhouse

Jury Comments:

“I was impressed by the use of materials, the colors, they just fit so well, and I believe in all kinds of seasons. The use of materials gives this great impact.

The spaces are really beautiful, the scale of them. This house more than any others had a really lovely sense of scale to all of the interior spaces. Also, the modulation of light well-faced windows had a very nice balance to it. Unusual in a sense, but also familiar at the same time, it achieves that level of beauty that is a rare thing.

AIAVT Merit Award – Field House

Jury Comments:

I think it is one of the very few projects that we have seen that has such a strong notion of approach, it is both enclosing and open at the same time. You sort of enter through this narrow gap, you get a glimpse of the courtyard but you enter into the house and you see the fireplace directly ahead. There is a formality to that which is very powerful.

What appealed to me on this one was just a conceptual purity to the site planning to the arrangement of the forms to how they have used the forms. We have seen a number of these, these stripped vernacular, but to me, this was the purest of it, of how they manipulated the forms and the relationship between them.
